Three Pipers students reached the Regional (South Central England) Finals of the English Speaking Union (ESU) National Debating Competition, taking to the stage in Milton Keynes for an evening that tested intellect, composure and clarity of thought at the highest level. After more than two hours of waiting, they walked into the spotlight (quite literally) and delivered arguments of striking assurance and sophistication.

Only one team of six was selected by the judges to progress to the England Finals Day in London, and while our students were not among them, the decision rested on the finest of margins. Their performance was one that could very plausibly have been judged differently; no-one present would have been surprised. The standard across the room was exceptional.

What distinguished our students was not simply that they held their own, but the manner in which they did so. Intellectual, eloquent and poised, they spoke with confidence and precision, responding quickly and thoughtfully under pressure, never visibly phased. Their arguments were controlled yet agile, grounded in careful reasoning and delivered with quiet authority.

To see them debating alongside the strongest schools in the region was both impressive and affirming. This was not an outlier performance, but the culmination of sustained progress. Over the past 18 years, no Pipers debating team has reached this level; a reflection of how far these students have pushed themselves, and of the standards they now meet with confidence.

This was an evening that underscored what high-level debating demands: patience, intellectual courage, and the ability to think clearly under scrutiny. Our students demonstrated all three; and in doing so, confirmed their place among the very best in the region.
