As part of a theme within their Sculpture lessons in Year 8, our students have embraced this year’s Cultural Celebration Week with enthusiasm and showed great research when finishing their projects.

To begin the project, one group started off undertaking observational drawings of cultural objects in different media. They then chose a particular culture to research and did projects in their sketchbooks, as well as large mixed media pieces focused on the patterns, designs and motifs of that chosen culture. To conclude the project (as well as our Cultural Celebration Week) clay masks/faces were created, as they hold a hold and diverse history in various culture, including ancient Egypt and Greece, Indian, Native American, Mexican, Japanese, African and many more.

Another Year 8 group also put together clay mandalas for their cultural projects. A mandala is a circular, geometric design that is used frequently in meditation and spiritual practice. It has symbolic significance in Hinduism and Buddhism. The designs and shapes can vary, making each pattern particularly unique for each student.

You can see pictures from the projects in the Flickr album below. Well done to each student for the great work and focus in putting together this artwork.
