Pre-Prep Year 9

On Wednesday 13 May 2026, Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 students enjoyed a wonderfully imaginative and hands-on Science Eco activity, centred around the important theme of clean air and caring for our environment.

The session began with an engaging challenge: our visiting fairies (Senior Science teachers) were struggling to breathe because of air pollution. The students were set an important mission, to design and create a safe, clean-air habitat where the fairies could thrive. Inspired by the Eden Project, our students designed creative model environments by constructing their own terrariums.

Each terrarium became a self-contained world, carefully built with plants to help produce clean air. The students were fascinated to learn how their miniature ecosystems functioned and will be able to watch the water cycle in action as “rain” forms inside their creations. The activity beautifully brought science concepts such as air quality, plant life and sustainability to life.

The session was made even more special by the support of Year 9 students, who worked alongside their younger peers with enthusiasm and care, helping them to build and refine their fairy habitats. Their encouragement and teamwork played a key role in the success of the day.

The two Senior Science staff fairies, Fairy Liquid and Fairy NonBio commented: "The students had lots of fun building the terrariums. It is important for future generations that students realise the importance plants play in creating an ecosystem that people can survive in. Eco-domes like the ones the students made are going to be important when establishing life on other planets."

We are also very grateful to our Science staff, teachers and technicians for their preparation and for helping to bring a little extra magic to the occasion.

It was a joyful and memorable day, sparking curiosity, creativity and a deeper understanding of how we can all look after our environment.
