Pipers was transformed for the celebration of our annual Founder’s Day. Pupils and staff were a riot of colour embracing the themes and fashions of the 1950s.  Inventive designs included a Mr Potato Head, a motorway and the 38th parallel. Not to mention a couple of Dunkin' Donuts who survived the day intact!

In lessons girls had a taste of the 1950s literally, sampling food from the decade. IT pupils practised their '50s secretarial skills whilst in RS everyone considered the Coronation. In Art, classes considered abstract expressionism and in DT the girls embraced the skills required by apprentices of the era. Science explored the space race by making a Sputnik satellite and in History students studied iconic photos of the time. Year 13 Spanish students held an animated debate about the influence of Lorca.  In Prep the sounds of the ‘50s rang throughout the classrooms and Pre-Prep performed a lively Hand Jive to kick start their afternoon.

Everyone enjoyed a Coronation-themed buffet in the dining room resplendent with bunting, the fish fingers were particularly popular! Many pupils then adjourned to the Arts Centre to enjoy our film for the day 'Lady and the Tramp' stopping on the way to admire 'George' the Morris Minor, kindly lent to us by the parents of Nia F.

The school also hosted a small exhibition of life at Pipers in the 1950s featuring a Pye radio and an original programme from the Festival of Britain, kindly loaned to us by the parents of July H-M. Later in the afternoon we acknowledged the profound and lasting influence of our founder Jesse Cross, several of our Jesse Cross scholars visited her grave locally and lay flowers. This was followed by a fantastic Founder’s Day assembly led by Rev Meardon. The assembly ended with the traditional cutting of the cake by a member of our Reception class joined by our Head Girls. The crown cake created by Holroyd Howe was perfect. Another amazing Founder’s Day - roll on next year when big things will be happening as we enter our 90th year!
