Year 12 Historian Cianna W attended the Historical Association Great Debate National Final at Windsor Castle and delivered an inspiring speech on the subject ‘what history means to me’.

Speaking engagingly about the work of Nelson Mandela, Martin Luther King and Mahatma Gandhi, Cianna was a great ambassador for the School and we would like to congratulate her on her achievement in gaining a place at the final of this prestigious competition.

The Great Debate is a public speaking competition where students have five minutes to present their speech without props, notes, or any supporting material. Each competitor must demonstrate research as well as historical argument.

This year, students were encouraged to explore their own family histories, meaningful people, and key historic events that they think has an affect on them personally or the world in which they live.

Cianna’s detailed and impassioned speech on three incredibly iconic and inspirational figures in history was well researched, well-reasoned and well presented. The competition is an ideal opportunity to gain valuable experience in speaking to an audience, developing debating skills, building confidence, and growing self-esteem.
