Pre-Prep and Prep Music

Throughout the academic year our students are offered many opportunities to perform and share their talents with the rest of the school community. One such opportunity was this week’s Prep Department Music Concert. It was a joyous evening of music-making from a variety of our younger vocalists and instrumentalists.

The concert began with the Year 5 and 6 Young Voices Choir 2018 who performed three of the songs they had learnt for the Young Voices concert at the O2 in January. Their rendition of “Africa” by David Paich & Jeff Porcaro called for some audience participation which really got everyone into the swing of the evening. Next it was the turn of the Year 3 Recorder Group who demonstrated just how far they have come this year. The girls have not only been learning to play, but have also started to learn how to read music, and it was fantastic to see how far they have progressed.

The Year 4 Ukulele Players and Ukulele Group then took to the stage with upbeat renditions of “Rockstar” and “Crackers Maracas”. Their props really added to the spirit of the pieces and the girls even managed to include some dance moves as they played! The musical talent continued when the Prep Rock Band came out to rock the Arts Centre Theatre playing “Smoke on the Water” by Deep Purple and “Thinking out Loud” by Ed Sheeran. Later in the concert the Senior Rock Band also came out to perform “Human” by Rag ‘n’ Bone Man.

In a change of pace the next act was the winner of this year’s Hampden House Talent Show who took to the stage to sing “Castle on a Cloud” from “Les Misérables”. She was followed by Sinfonia who performed the “Ode to Joy”, “Beauty and the Beast” and “Take my Breath Away”.

The Prep School Choir brought the evening to its conclusion with their homage to the music from “The Greatest Showman”, with a special guest performance from Mr Spargo and dances choreographed by the girls themselves which really brought the words and music to life.

Headmistress, Mrs Ness-Gifford, said “It was a truly wonderful evening that allowed the girls love of music and performance to clearly shine through. I was very impressed by the many extra-curricular groups who performed and thoroughly enjoyed the sheer variety of music on offer.”
