Whole School English

Year 8 girls worked extremely hard in their English sets last week to adapt the iconic Charlotte Bronte novel, “Jane Eyre”, for the stage. The girls were challenged to produce an impromptu performance of this classic novel, with responsibility for scripting, props, music, dramatisation and the creation of supporting visual effects such as backdrops.

Wednesday was the first time the girls had the opportunity to rehearse on the stage as a single company. The performance was delivered Friday afternoon to a selection of Year 7, 9 and 10 pupils. The girls exceeded all expectations translating this text into a memorable theatrical experience - even incorporating aspects of dance to tell the story. Such was the success of this venture, we intend this to be an annual project for Year 8 English with the potential of collaborating with other Departments to make this a truly cross-curricular event.

English teacher, Mr Reed said, “The girls have thoroughly embraced the novel and seem to have delighted in the themes and characters in a way that simply reading the book would not have achieved. Congratulations Year 8 for rising to the challenge and demonstrating what can be accomplished in a short space of time through focus, team work, belief and a touch of creativity.”
