Over the summer, Pipers student Anjika G gained an insight into the world of elite cricket officiating when she shadowed the Fourth Umpire during the Women's Hundred match between London Spirit and Southern Brave at the iconic Lord's Cricket Ground.

The experience provided her with a behind-the-scenes look at everything that goes into successfully delivering a professional cricket fixture. From pre-match preparations through to the conclusion of the evening's action, she was able to observe first-hand the many responsibilities undertaken by the officiating team.

The day began with a walk of the pitch, where Anjika learned how the playing surface is inspected, measured and prepared ahead of the match. She discovered the importance of precision and attention to detail in ensuring the pitch meets the required standards for professional competition.

One of the highlights of the day was witnessing the toss and meeting team captains Sophie Molineux and Charlie Dean, giving her an insight into the preparations and decision-making that take place before the first ball is bowled. She also spent time with England international Lauren Bell and presenter Katie George, learning about the process by which players select and approve the cricket balls used during each innings.

Anjika was further able to visit the Third Umpire's area, where she observed how video reviews are conducted and how match officials monitor timings and playing conditions throughout the game. This experience demonstrated the crucial role technology now plays in supporting on-field decision-making and maintaining the smooth running of matches.

As the day progressed, Anjika remained involved behind the scenes as preparations were made for the men's fixture later that evening. She observed how the ground was adapted for the second match, including adjusting the boundary sizes, selecting fresh match balls and overseeing the procedures surrounding the second toss.

Alongside these practical experiences, Anjika also enjoyed lunch in the historic Lord's Dining Hall alongside members of the women's teams, adding another memorable element to an already exceptional day.
