Pastoral Care

Pipers is a supportive and nurturing community and visitors to the school often comment on the positive "feel" as they cross the threshold.

Our pastoral care, enriched as it is by our Christian ethos, encourages an exploration of personal values and beliefs as well as a respect for the values and beliefs of others.

Form Tutors and Year Heads really get to know the girls in their care and the girls are allowed to blossom in an atmosphere where they are valued. When there are problems, we do our utmost to ensure that they are addressed quickly. We also regard good communication as an essential aspect of the partnership between school and home.

We provide sensitive support, monitoring and encouragement through:

  • Induction programmes for all ages to ensure familiarity and to introduce the ethos and core values of the school.
  • A comprehensive personal and social education programme.
  • Support programmes for all girls which include the development of study, revision and examination skills.
  • Close liaison between members of the pastoral team to ensure continuity of information and care at times of transition.

Spiritual life

Our Chaplain and Chapel provide the Christian focus for the school.

Medical care

Our Nursing Sister is on hand to give professional medical advice when necessary and girls are able to make appointments with a confidential counsellor. 

Student Listening

Pipers Corner operates a Student Listener (SL) scheme which is designed to allow older girls to provide guidance to younger girls in one-to-one supportive relationships.

Following training with professional counsellors, a team of senior girls ensure that there is someone available each day for younger girls to talk to about the many challenges they may be facing. The team has support from the School Counsellor who visits Pipers on a weekly basis and other Senior members of Pipers staff.

The aims of the scheme are that a young person should:

  • Be actively listened to without undue interruption.
  • Be given space to talk about their problem.
  • Be assisted by the SL to generate options that they may have and be allowed to explore the consequences of these options.
  • Not feel judged by the SL.
  • Perceive the SL as empathic and genuine.
  • Not be burdened by the SL's problems or have to listen to SL's previous experience.
  • Be provided with other sources of help/information and support, for example, information on outside agencies or help lines if they exist.
  • Not to be given advice or told what to do by the SL.
