Verse Speaking Competition - 16/12/08

The Autumn Term ended on a high at Pipers Corner last week with a hotly contested event – The Pipers Verse Speaking Competition (for girls in Prep to MIV). All of the girls who took part did so with skill and enthusiasm, making the final decision very tough for the judges.

Over 30 Junior and Senior girls took part in the competition. Each of them read one poem from a selection of nine in front of an audience made up of the rest of the girls and the judging panel – Miss Andrew, Ms Halton and Mrs Thorpe, a teacher from Wycombe Abbey School.

Mrs Thorpe was the head of the judging panel and told the girls that, "if you can develop a love of poetry and verse speaking you can speak anything. It teaches you a lot about language, speech and communication." She praised all of the girl's efforts, in particular their clear diction, good shape and control of pace. Things she identified that could be improved included use of facial expressions and the need to finish off words at the end of lines.

The result of the competition was as follows:

Seniors

  1. Aimee Mowat-Helling (MIV3) – reading "Mid-term Break" by Seamus Heaney
  2. Harriet Dunn (LIV3) – reading "Jabberwocky" by Lewis Carroll

Juniors

  1. Misha Jethwa (LIII) – reading "Dad and the Cat and the Tree" by Kit Wright
  2. Jodie Pope (UIII1) – reading "My Sister Jane" by Ted Hughes
  3. Alexandra Charnock (UIII1) – reading "The Sound Collector" by Roger McGough

Well done to all of the girls who took part and spent time preparing their poems!
