Sensational "Godspell" - 21/11/08

First night nerves were nowhere to be seen last night as the Pipers Players began their run of four performances of the musical "Godspell". All the girls demonstrated a great deal of enthusiasm and energy in their portrayal of this "rock religion" musical.

Written in 1970 by Stephen Schwartz and John-Michael Tabelak, "Godspell" is based on the Gospel according to St Matthew and deals with the last days of Jesus, with dramatised versions of several well-known parables.

From the haunting "All Good Gifts" to the lively "Light of the World", the message of "Godspell" is a celebration of community and the family of man, demonstrating the ultimate power of loving your neighbour, forgiveness, tolerance and celebration.

The idea of community was very much carried through in the way that the production was staged. With two main casts performing at alternate performances, the supporting cast, dancers and a band, not to mention set designers, make-up girls, costume designers and the backstage crew, over 100 girls were involved. Many teachers, parents and other Pipers staff also gave their time and skills to help ensure that the production was such a success.

Director and Head of Performing Arts at Pipers, Heather Andrew said "My focus has been to encourage all those involved in Godspell to find their voice in this production…I hope our approach to a timeless story will challenge, inspire and entertain our audiences and that they may choose to reflect that in our western world of too many 'quick fixes' we may seek to find a spiritual dimension to fill that empty space in our lives."
