Loving Literature at Pipers - 24/10/08

Earlier this Term all girls had the opportunity to take part in some fantastic activities as part of Children's Book Week. With quizzes, a favourite author survey, book sale and book recommendations to read there was something for everyone to enjoy.

Two of the highlights were a Book Week Quiz and a Poetry Quiz. With questions such as - "Who won the 2008 Orange Prize for Fiction?", "Who wrote the poem Do Not Go Gentle into That Good Night?" and "What did the Owl and the Pussy-Cat take to sea with them?" - the quizzes really tested the girls' literary knowledge.

We are very pleased to announce that the winners are as follows:

  • Book Week Quiz: Winner (£10 book token) Sophie Geddes (LIV)
  • Runner-up Natasha Lindon (UIV)
  • Poetry Quiz: Winner (£10 book token) Polly Annetts-Burke (UIV)
  • Runner-up Eleanor Waite (LIV)

Other Book Week highlights included:

  • Lizzie Atkinson, Library Prefect, and her team of Library Representatives raising a brilliant £99.85 at the Book Sale! Proceeds have been sent to the Arthritis Research Campaign charity. Thank you to everyone who kindly donated books.

  • A Form "Favourite Poet" survey in which we found that Benjamin Zephaniah, Allan Ahlberg, Spike Milligan, William Wordsworth, Seamus Heaney and Wilfred Owen were the most popular poets.
  • The CBW Assembly where several girls (and Mrs Parry!) "escaped" from the Library, dressed in character, and talked in turn about their 5* book. At the end of assembly the audience were invited to write down their favourite 5* book on index cards. "Twilight" by Stephenie Meyer won overwhelmingly!

Well done to the School Librarian, Mrs Williams, and Library Prefect, Lizzie Atkinson, for all their hard work in making the week such a success.
