Bringing History to Life - 20/11/08

The girls in LIII (Year 5) really brought History to life yesterday when they performed dramatisations about the Tudor period in their lesson. All of the girls took on their roles with a great deal of enthusiasm and showed a real depth of knowledge through their performances.

The girls have spent time this term learning about Tudor History and events that took place during the reign of Henry VIII. Using their knowledge, the girls were asked to get into small groups and put together a short dramatisation of one particular aspect of Henry VIII's reign – the Dissolution of the Monasteries.

The girls researched the events in detail before writing their scripts and deciding who should play which part and what costumes to wear. There were five groups performing in total which meant that there were a variety of characters on show from vengeful King Henrys, to peaceful nuns and even an appearance by the Pope!

After each performance the rest of the class were asked to think about what they had seen and then offer "Stars" – to say what had been really good and "Wishes" – things that could be improved.

Following the performances Head of Prep, Mrs Doran, said "The girls did exceptionally well today. These dramatisations not only gave them the opportunity to test their History knowledge it also allows them to draw on their drama and presentation skills. Acting out scenes from History is a really fantastic way to help them reinforce things they learn in their lessons in a memorable way."
