Speaking with Confidence - 27/03/08

The end of term saw the annual Pipers Corner Inter-House Public Speaking Competition. Each House chose four representatives to deliver a speech all related to a main theme, with a link speaker to hold the presentations together.

This year's themes were "Home" (Hampden), "Green is the Colour" (Mandeville), "A Taste of The Seven Deadly Sins" (Milton) and "Life" (Penn). The high standard of speaking and range of topics covered meant that it was a difficult competition to judge. All the girls made confident speeches that amused, entertained and provoked discussion amongst the watching audience of girls and teachers.

The presentations were scrutinised by a panel of judges who were looking specifically at the content, delivery and the overall impression made by each speaker. Each presentation was scored to decide the overall result of which House won. The results of the competition were:

  • 1st place – Hampden
  • 2nd place – Milton
  • 3rd place – Mandeville
  • 4th place - Penn

At the end of the competition as she was announcing the winning House, the Chair of Judges, Mrs Beaver, said "It has been a super afternoon and I've thoroughly enjoyed hearing you speaking today. I'd like to congratulate all of you for the way you worked hard to make a connection with your audience which is a very hard thing to do."

A special award for "The Best Speaker" was presented to Imogen Egan from Hampden, in recognition of her superb delivery and the way she managed to strike a chord with the audience with her speech entitled "Home is where the Heart is".
