Aspiring artists at Pipers Corner School attended the official launch of this year's Miniature Painting Competition on Tuesday lunch time. Mr Phillip Hanton, a semi-professional miniature painter and member of a number of miniature painting societies came into school for the event and also to explain a bit more about miniature painting to girls who are new to this particular area of art.
The rules of the competition require girl to complete their entries on a background no larger than 6cm x 4cm. This means that many of the girls will be working at an unfamiliar size when they are so used to painting on regular sized canvasses.

The girls are able to choose their own subject such as still life, landscapes, seascapes and wildlife. They can also choose what type of painting technique they wish to use, for example oils, water colours or pastels.
All entries have to be submitted by Friday 1 May after which they will be judged by Mr Hanton. First prize in the competition is a £50 book token with art materials as the prize for second and third place.
The winning entries will be announced on the website during the first week in May.
