Marvellous Mathematicians - 26/03/09

Earlier this month Pipers Corner held a very special "Maths Day" during which teachers were asked to include an element of Maths in their lessons. From PE to English, History and French the girls were encouraged to explore how Maths is important in everyday life.

Some of the interesting activities in lessons on the day included costing out a holiday during English and considering timing and records in PE. In Geography girls explored averages in latitude and longitude, whilst in French younger girls learnt how to say their times tables. Maths was even in evidence in Art as the girls used rulers for accurate measurement and also in Dance as they considered symmetry and shape.

The girls also had the chance for some Maths related games during lunch break as the Maths Department hosted an Inter-House Maths relay event. The girls were split into teams within their Houses and then given various Maths questions. Sat on either side of the room the girls had to complete a question then run the answer over to their team mates so that they could use it to complete their own question. The winning House was Penn with the Penn UIV team being the highest scoring individual team.

Many of the girls took part in a number of library competitions. Congratulations to the following winners:

  • Maths puzzle quiz: Lizzie Atkinson (U6)
  • Sudoku: Robyn Wimshurst (LV)
  • Countdown: Emily House (UIV)

Head of Maths and organiser of the day, Mrs Petherbridge said "The day was a great success, aimed at raising awareness of the use of maths in cross-curricular activities and highlighting the fact that Maths is all around us in every aspect of life. We also hoped that it showed that Maths is fun and interesting and doesn't need to be a frightening subject."
