Creative Choreography - 20/03/09

Girls studying GCSE and A Level Dance performed their examination pieces in front of an audience of family and friends on Thursday evening. There were a variety of solo and group performances based on a number of interesting themes.

At GCSE level girls are required to perform a group dance, a set study and also to choreograph their own piece. With innovative titles including "Dove tails", "Soft Toy Sabotage" and "Abstract and Arc Lines" the girls demonstrated a high level of creativity and skill in their performances. Their group piece "Lean on Me", performed to the Bill Withers song, was a wonderful example of how dancers use space and form and the ways in which they relate to each other throughout the piece.

The creativity continued with the A Level performances. As well as AS solo dances and a duet there were also a number of A2 group dances which had each been choreographed by one of the girls. These performances were introduced by the girls who had choreographed them to explain the themes behind them.

Two of the girls, Alice Einchcomb and Head Girl, Charlotte Jeffery, had chosen to base their dances around Isaac Newton's theories of motion. Both these pieces included symmetrical formations which were very beautiful. Perhaps more unusual was Victoria Marler's "Tickets to the Mystery tour". This dance was based on a painting by Cheryl Cook entitled "Granny Driving the Bus". Each of the girls dancing reflected a character in the painting which made it a hugely energetic and entertaining piece.

Dance teacher, Mrs Hadler said, "All of the girls have worked incredibly hard to prepare themselves for their practical examinations. The creativity you see here tonight has all come from them and their ideas and I'm sure you'll agree that the end result is an interesting and impressive evening of dance which incorporates not only a number of different styles but also demonstrates how well the girls work together."
