Victorian Times - 15/02/08

UIII visited Reading Museum today to enhance their study of the Victorians. It included a chance to dress up and also the experience of what it was like to be a pupil in a Victorian classroom.

In the School's area the girls had a lesson that was in three parts. The first concentrated on dressing up as Victorian people both rich and poor and learning about different lifestyles. The second part focused on studying Victorian artefacts with the girls working in groups trying to work out what various items were. They asked good questions, made educated guesses and wrote down what else they would like to know about the said objects. The groups then presented their findings to the rest of the class. Finally we played parlour games, which were great fun.

A really helpful guide took us to the "Victorian School Room" and gave a really interesting talk about the experiences of the Victorian schoolchild. The Victorian classroom was authentic and the girls enjoyed sitting upright at desks with inkwells. One lucky girl wore the Dunce's Cap and many were threatened by the cane, which delighted them further!

The staff at Reading Museum, including course providers, teachers and the sales team in the shop all commented on how beautifully behaved and enthusiastic our girls were. They are always a delight to take on trips. We were grateful to also have the help of four mums who also enjoyed accompanying us to Reading.
