Report by Zoe Boden – Upper Sixth 2008

Parent's Day may have been the last school event of the year for some; however, for three members of the Upper Sixth French class, Katie Skinner, Louise Winslow and Zoe Boden, as well as their amazing teacher Mrs Ashby, it was not!

We sprinted away from the end of the award service to catch a Eurostar train into Paris, where we stayed for a couple of jam-packed sight-seeing, and generally fun-filled, days. On our first night we went out to a Parisian Club called Barrio Latino. After a drink all four of us made our way to the dance floor, and let me tell you, Mrs Ashby knows how to boogie!

The next morning we got up and made our way to the Eiffel Tower, an exciting moment for Louise who had never seen it before. After witnessing a Greenpeace protest on the Tower we began our cycling tour around Paris, which was an experience never to be forgotten! The tour took us to various famous landmarks where our tour guide, Andrew, told us all about each one. After our bike tour we decided to go shopping in Le Marais where we visited lots of little boutiques and bought some nice presents to take home. As the sun went down we took a boat cruise along La Seine, from which we saw Notre Dame, La Musée D'Orsay and other beautiful landmarks lit up along the river. The Eiffel Tower at night was another amazing sight as it was lit up with blue lights and had the European Union symbol on the front to signify France's six-month presidency of the EU.

The following day we went straight to Notre Dame where we admired the famous stained glass windows, as well as the spectacular architecture of the cathedral. Afterwards we enjoyed some ice-creams in a nearby park, whilst sitting in the sunshine and watching an air display put on for Bastille Day celebrations. We then went to Montmartre where we saw the white-domed Basilica of the Sacré Cœur and appreciated the views of the city. Sadly, we then had to make our way back to Gare du Nord station where we took the Eurostar home again.

As well as being educational and encouraging us to use the French skills we developed at Pipers it was also a very special trip as it allowed us to say goodbye to a great teacher who has taught the three of us for many years. It also allowed us to bring our French lessons to a close with a great trip and some great memories. Thank you very much Mrs Ashby for all your help with our GCSEs and A Levels, as well as for organizing such a memorable trip.
