Eden Project - 12/03/09 - 14/03/09

In mid-March 42 excited girls in UIV, along with four members of staff made the trip down to Cornwall to visit the Eden Project where they experienced Rainforest and Mediterranean climates maintained in the imposing biome structures. As well as learning about the many uses of a variety of unusual plants the girls also had the chance to consider the concept of "Fair Trade".

On arriving at the Project the girls were amazed by the awesome sight of the biomes, as they began their day with an introduction to the project from the Eden Education Officers, followed by a morning workshop about "Jungle Connections". The girls were split into two groups to complete various activities that demonstrated the many uses of Rainforest materials in everyday products, such as rubber, chocolate, pharmaceuticals, and many food items.

Then it was off to explore the Tropical biome with a challenge to find as many tropical plants and their uses as possible. Due to the climate control in the biome the girls were able to experience the heat and humidity of the Rainforest, thankfully alleviated by standing in the refreshing spray of the waterfall found at the top of the biome.

Back in the classroom the girls had a further challenge - determining the fair division of £1.80, the price of a large chocolate bar, between the various groups involved in its journey to our consumption. Groups such as the farmers, governments, manufacturers and retailers made their bids and after some interesting justifications of their positions, the girls came remarkably close to the actual amounts received. They agreed that the farmers deserved more, and so the case for "Fair Trade" was established.

The afternoon session was spent in the Mediterranean biome, looking at plant adaptations to the Mediterranean climate. This biome was light and airy compared with the oppressiveness of the Rainforest.

Back at the Okehampton YHA where the girls were staying, Mrs Collins led the group through a brief classroom activity about the location of Eden in the disused China Clay pit, its contribution to the Cornish economy and to environmental protection. Then after an evening meal, it was time to don those outdoor clothes and prepare for the Night Hike on Dartmoor!

The return journey to school was via Wookey Hole where the girls enjoyed an interesting cave tour. The guides talked to them about the geology and folklore of the caves, particularly about the exploration of the many different chambers – which were spectacular to behold.
