Topping out Phase 3 - 23/06/09

Phase 3 of the school's "Building for the Future Project" reached a momentous milestone today as a Topping Out Ceremony was held to mark the completion of the new building's structure. It was a lovely opportunity to thank the architects and builders for all their hard work and celebrate the final stages of the development.

With the Architect, builders, Chairman of Governors, Headmistress, Bursar and other members of staff present, form representatives were invited to join the topping out celebrations as the final finial was placed in position on the roof.

The practice of "topping out" a new building can be traced to the ancient Scandinavian religious practice of placing a tree on the top of a new building to appease the tree-dwelling spirits of their ancestors that had been displaced. Today this formal ceremony is often marked by the placing of the last block of masonry or brick.

Work on the new building which will bring together all the teaching facilities for Art, Ceramics, Textiles, Design Technology, Food Technology and ICT began in Summer 2008. It is due to be completed in time for September 2009 and the start of the new academic year.

As part of the ceremony the Chairman of Governors gave a brief history of the background of "Building for the Future Project" which was conceived seven years ago when it was recognised that the school's teaching facilities were in need of a major upgrade to ensure that they would meet the needs of the 21st Century.

The Bursar then went on to thank everyone involved including the school Governors, the Architect, Teachers and all those involved in fine tuning the design and specification, the main contractors Knowles and Son and all the Trades workmen.

The occasion was brought to a close with a toast to the safe working so far and for the future, followed by a second toast to the success of the new teaching facilities and all the girls that will enjoy their benefit.
