Drama students in Years 10, 11 and 12 were challenged to consider some difficult questions this week when they watched a performance of a brand new adaptation of "Medea" by Euripides, from touring theatre company, Splendid Productions.
The play is based on an ancient Greek mythical romance which tells the story of Medea, a princess who helped Jason steal the famous Golden Fleece, and the terrible events that unfold as their union falls apart. Driven to despair when Jason leaves her to marry another, Medea kills their two sons in a final act of revenge.

Splendid Productions specialise in bringing Brechtian technique to life for students and aim to present political theatre that encourages an audience to think. This was certainly true for the girls at Pipers as the play forced them to consider if the truth can be completely black and white and led them to think about what it would take to drive a woman to murder her own children.
With a cast of three the action was performed through a series of intertwining episodes with a narrative element drawing it all together. Following the performance the girls had the chance to take part in a post-show discussion with the actors. This was a wonderful opportunity for the girls as they asked the group about how they came up with the ideas for their adaptations, what their influences were and where they had trained.
