Bringing History to Life - 14/10/09

Over the last week Y6 girls have been exploring the lives of children in the Victorian age. As part of their History lessons the girls brought their Victorian alter egos to life by dressing up and giving presentations as trappers, maids of all work, factory workers, miners and chimney sweeps.

Wearing costumes, they had brought from home, the girls each performed a presentation to the rest of the class about their lives in Victorian times and what their jobs entailed.

From the maids we heard all about the extremely long days and many chores which included sweeping floors, polishing silver, making the beds, stoking the fires and helping the cook in the kitchen.

The trapper, miners and factory workers presented the more dangerous elements of a childhood in Victorian times as we heard stories of pit collapses, deaths and people being trapped in industrial machinery.

The chimney sweeps also talked of the hazards involved in their daily lives and one sweep even told the group how if work wasn't done fast enough there was a danger that a fire would get lit beneath them!

By "becoming" Victorian children it really allowed the girls to fully explore what life was like in the 1800s and appreciate the contrast between the life that could have been available to them in the past and the many advantages they have in the present day.
